There’s no place like home. Every creature innately knows this.

Your donation helps save orphaned wildlife.

This Golden Eagle trained on a tether to strengthen its wings and muscles before a beautiful release.
Every orphaned animal we raise, every injured animal we rehabilitate and every healthy animal we release, all rely on donors like you.

At Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, we work year-round to return injured and orphaned wildlife home. That said, we cannot release animals randomly. Before any animal is freed we make sure they are ready for their lives away from our care and returned to an appropriate environment, ideally near where they were found.

Before releasing animals and birds, we ensure appropriate food and shelter is available at our release locations…

Racoons are released in wooded areas near running streams. They usually climb up the trees first, but quickly explore their new homes. River otters need fast moving water with plenty of fish and crawdads.

In over 40 years, we have released more than 17,000 animals and birds back into their native environments, a release rate of over 60%. We are proud of our release success, especially considering the poor condition in which many of our animals arrive.

In 2018, the most dramatic rehabilitation and release effort has been the extensive care of shorebirds impacted by a botulism outbreak in Northern Nevada. We are in the midst of treating and releasing hundreds of Avocets and Ibis into a safe, new habitat, Little Washoe Lake.

We Need Your Help to keep caring for and returning these birds and animals back into our beautiful Tahoe habitat. Our dedicated volunteers work hard and the expenses can be daunting, but we love these creatures and we want to Set Them Free! Please consider making a donation to our organization to help us care for and release Tahoe’s wild animals.
